Can Drones be Lethal for Humans?

Enterprise Technology Review | Monday, October 07, 2019

Drones are the new emerging trend among all the industries. While most people are exploring the vast potential of this new technology, some issues are posing a big question mark on its use.

FREMONT, CA: Drones, also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), are aircrafts that can be controlled by a pilot or can be preprogrammed to fly autonomously. A significant number of industries are adopting this technology, including government, military, commercial, and recreational users.

Drones or UAVs carry digital imaging technologies, communication systems, and other components, which makes it a multifunctional system that can perform a variety of tasks. However, it is also the reason for several debates regarding its legal and ethical concerns.

Challenges faced while using drones

1. Accidents: Drones are very susceptible to accidents. If not provided with proper training and knowledge regarding flying a drone or programmed incorrectly, the gadget might crash or can destroy something or hit someone. In the past, many episodes have been reported in which the drones flying near the airports posed a serious threat of collision and UAV crashes, causing injuries to several people.

2. Potential exploitation: The convenience and accessibility of the drones have made it susceptible to illegal motives of fraudsters. Criminals and terrorists can use them for privacy invasion or targeted population groups.

3. Interference with nature:  There are many reported incidents of animals attacking the drones mid-flight. This poses a significant threat to the animal as well as whoever or whatever is below the UAV. In 2014, a quadcopter in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was attacked by a red-tailed hawk. Later, its video from the encounter went viral.

4. Injuries: The rogue drones can cause injuries to people, for instance, when a drone charged into the crowd during an Australian sports event. There have also been incidents in which drones were carrying radioactive materials for individuals carrying out illicit activities. If not regulated, the wrongdoers can effortlessly misuse this technology for their malicious intentions.

5. Privacy Invasion

It is probably the number one issue that is linked to the use of UAVs. The thought of drones probing around and trespassing one's property is frightening and distressing. It can be utilized to spy on people to allocate information without even them noticing it. In fact, paparazzi agencies have started spying over famous personalities using hi-tech drones.

The drones have come as a blessing but at the cost of some threats. It is essential to create a regulatory mechanism to keep its misuse at bay. Proper laws should be passed regarding the use of drones as well as the misusage of its technology.
